NoDebate.net: There *is* a debate about skilled immigration

Summary

Despite what Michael Bloomberg and the "Partnership for a New American Economy" tell you, there is a debate about skilled immigration.

Bloomberg and others lead the "Partnership for a New American Economy" ("PNAE") which advocates for higher skilled immigration. At their site NoDebate.org they pretend that there's no debate about this issue, when there is.

At their site, PNAE conveniently forgets to consult with most Americans. While establishment leaders from the GOP and the Democratic Party and some think tanks might agree with PNAE, many or most Americans want to reduce immigration or keep it the same.

Impacts on Americans

Some number of skilled immigrants might start companies that eventually employ a certain number of Americans. However, those who don't start companies will wind up being competition for American workers.

Michael Bloomberg and PNAE might not realize it, but millions of Americans are currently unemployed. That includes large numbers of technical workers. Skilled immigrants who don't start companies will make things worse for many unemployed Americans.

Skilled immigrants will have an especially negative impact on older American technical workers. Companies have been known to use H1B workers to keep wages low or drive Americans out of work; see the video to the right.

Harming the Third World

Skilled immigration has several negative impacts on the sending countries.

While many immigrants do send money home, that has negative side-effects; it's like living on candy. Instead of developing their own industries, those left behind in those countries become reliant on the U.S.

Third World countries need all the smart people they can keep. For instance, 6000 or less Mexicans students are adept at mathematics. Those are the people Mexico needs to develop their own country: they simply can't afford to lose any of those people to emigration.

Those who promote skilled immigration are in a way like colonialists of the past. In past centuries, poor foreign countries would be raided for their material assets. Nowadays, those like Bloomberg would "raid" them for their human assets.

Here's a list of the leaders of the Partnership for a New American Economy. The four mayors involved all support massive and illegal immigration in order to obtain political power. The goals of the others involved isn't hard to guess.

How skilled immigration proponents mislead

"Lies, damned lies, and statistics". Skilled immigration supporters try to mislead you in various ways.

One misleading claim that PNAE makes is that "More than 40 percent of the 2010 Fortune 500 companies were founded by immigrants or their children". While that's true to a certain extent, they also counted among those companies DuPont (whose founder arrived here in 1799) and Alexander Graham Bell (who became a citizen over 129 years ago). They even counted Bell twice. At least one of the companies that was supposedly founded by an immigrant (Intel) wasn't per that company's own historical records. Many of the companies involved only had immigrant (or child-of-immigrant) co-founder(s). Further, many of those founders/co-founders represent a wave of immigration that could not happen again (see the link).
